“From start to finish Luke has been a joy to work alongside as he took time to understand and get to know us both so that 'we' could be reflected in his garden design.”

Scottish Suburban Garden

One of the most satisfying gardens we have done, simply because it was a dramatic transformation, beyond what the clients envisioned could be possible.

This garden was a ‘standard’ suburban garden with lawn and decking, and dominated by a huge and rather oppressive 5m high Leylandii hedge, but with a surprise!

The brief was to create more enclosure from the main road, bring in nature, a water feature and lush planting and a calm place to sit near the garden pottery studio.

The garden was right on the rural-urban fringe with some unexpected magic!  Hidden behind this huge ‘boundary’ hedge was a woodland bank down to a stream which was actually owned by the client but never used or had even seen for years!  Well I’m glad to say we persuaded the client to courageously remove this enormous hedge and reveal the woodland garden beyond, which totally opened up the garden and create a transformed space.  We incorporated a contemporary pool water feature as part of a redesigned main terrace, which fell on 2 tiers into a pool which became a meandering stream down to a large pond at the end of the garden with a relaxed seating space next to it.  Removing the hedge enable ample space for a lawned garden and rich deep planted beds.

The front and side garden were redesigned so that they link to the rear garden, with a new private and sunny terrace in the front garden amongst a gravel garden.  The client chose to have more planted garden to the front and reduce to a single parking space.   The main rear terrace was made more private from the front with planting and corten screens staggered along the side garden.

We are so so happy with the result of this garden, which now feels like a lush country garden, rather than a suburban one.
