CHILTERNS LARGE FAMILY GARDEN

A two acre hill top garden with stunning views of the Chiltern hills required major remodeling to accomodate a large extension, making a family garden and to entertain 30 people.

The design concept of “Gnarly and smooth” is inspired by rare ancient Box woodland, the largest of which is in the Chilterns. The scheme plays with the contrasts of ‘gnarly’ rough, twisted forms juxtaposed with smooth planting and still water.

The garden uses the drama of Buxus Sempervirens in various forms, contorted trees, plant textures and meandering pathways against the delightful peace of a pond haven. The decked pond is a destination at the end of the garden to embrace the stunning hills beyond.

This design was selected as a finalist in the Society of Garden Design annual awards 2020.
