Arthur’s Hill - City Courtyard Garden
This was a courtyard which was previously used for parking a car. It had a degraded concrete surface, a big roller-gate and was at an angle which was really too steep to sit.
The brief was to turn the space into a relaxed haven (for people) to enjoy planting.
The design focused on utilising as much of the space for planting as we could so that we could soften a garden surrounded by tall walls. This meant an efficient use of seating and path space to facilitate deeper beds.
We removed the concrete, removed the roller-gate and rebuilt the rear wall with bricks that matched the property. To enable the garden to be level we incorporated an entrance space where we could house a bin store. We included some raised beds against the house to enable height and enclosure with the planting. We used some thick sandstone plank pavers from a local sandstone quarry laid in a staggered pattern leaving as much space for planting to soften the space and walls.
The planting included a large proportion of evergreen structure for year round volume.
